چکیده

induction of labor is one of the most common procedures during pregnancy. various methods for cervical ripening and labor induction have been described in the obstetrics literature; but the role of corticosteroids in the process of labor is not entirely understood. this study challenged the possible role of corticosteroids in induction of labor by extra-amniotic injection through an inflated intracervical foley balloon catheter. this randomized trial was conducted on 44 women with a single pregnancy, intact membranes, and an unfavorable cervix. they were randomly assigned to receive either 20 mg of dexamethasone in saline solution (study group, n=22) or saline solution only (control group, n=22) administered extra-amniotically through an intracervical inflated foley balloon catheter. eighteen (81.8%) patients in the study group and 20 (90.9%) in the control group entered the active phase of labor and were delivered vaginally. the mean time intervals between induction of labor to the active phase and between induction of labor to delivery were significantly shorter in the study group compared with those of the control group (3.3±2.1 hours vs. 9±4.7 hours, p

INDUCTION OF LABOR WITH USE OF A FOLEY CATHETER AND EXTRAAMNIOTIC CORTICOSTEROIDS

The purpose of this study is to show the effect of extraamniotic administration of corticosteroids to shorten the times to either active labor and/or delivery. This is a double blind randomized study. 65 patients who were candidates for the termination of pregnancy between the ages of 16-45, with intact membranes and unripe cervix were randomly divided into two groups, a study group (n=34)...

Do mechanical methods of cervical ripening increase infectious morbidity? A systematic review.

The purpose of this study was to review systematically randomized controlled trials that were associated with cervical ripening. We identified randomized controlled trials that compared the use of Foley catheter, with or without extraamniotic saline solution infusion, Laminaria, or hygroscopic dilators for cervical ripening or induction with pharmacologic agents or placebo. Randomized controlle...

A comparison of inpatient with outpatient balloon catheter cervical ripening: a pilot randomized controlled trial

BACKGROUND One in four Australian births are induced. If cervical ripening using a prostaglandin is required, a pre-labour overnight hospitalisation and separation from family and support companions is necessary. Recent evidence shows that balloon catheter cervical ripening is just as effective as prostaglandins, but does not cause uterine stimulation. For women with low risk pregnancies, this ...

Misoprostol for cervical ripening in non-pregnant women: a randomized double-blind controlled trial of oral versus vaginal regimens.

BACKGROUND The objective was to compare the efficacy of oral versus vaginal misoprostol for cervical ripening in non-pregnant women. METHODS Sixty non-pregnant women scheduled for diagnostic hysteroscopy were randomized by computerized randomization schedule to 400 microg of misoprostol orally (n = 30) or 200 microg vaginally (n = 30) administered 12 h prior to surgery. The diameter of the ce...

Treatment of lateral epicondylitis with platelet-rich plasma, glucocorticoid, or saline: a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial.

BACKGROUND Lateral epicondylitis (LE) is a common musculoskeletal disorder for which an effective treatment strategy remains unknown. PURPOSE To examine whether a single injection of platelet-rich plasma (PRP) is more effective than placebo (saline) or glucocorticoid in reducing pain in adults with LE after 3 months. STUDY DESIGN Randomized controlled trial; Level of evidence, 1. METHODS ...
